About the Ministry of Minerals

The Ministry of Minerals was established in 2017 to manage Tanzania's vast mineral resources through sound policy, regulation and sustainable development.

About the Ministry

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania on 7th October, 2017 amended the Notice on assignment of Ministerial Functions (Instrument No.144 of 22nd April, 2016), creating a dedicated Ministry of Minerals.

The Ministry is mandated to formulate and monitor implementation of Mining Policies; Mines, Geophysical and Geological Surveys; Mining Commission Affairs; Value Addition in Mining Industries; Local Content in Mining Industries; Small Scale Mining Development; and Performance Improvement and Development of Human Resources.

The Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act, 2017 introduced key structural changes including the establishment of the Mining Commission as a body corporate, abolishment of the Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA), and transfer of operational functions to the Mining Commission and Geological Survey of Tanzania.

Mineral Policy & Legislation โ€” Formulating and reviewing national mineral policy and legal frameworks.

Mining Commission Oversight โ€” Supervising the Mining Commission as a public service parastatal responsible for licensing.

Value Addition โ€” Promoting local processing and beneficiation of minerals before export.

Small-Scale Mining โ€” Supporting artisanal and small-scale miners through formalisation, training and access to finance.

International Cooperation โ€” Strengthening partnerships with foreign governments, investors and multilateral institutions.
